these are the 3 albums that got the most play, as dictated by my last.fm stats
[barring any anomalies (like me listening to the song New Conditions uhhhhh 77 times)]
red moon in venus | kali uchis
was there ever any doubt? this album really does it for me. it got 245 plays this month.
Moonlight is my favorite track, absolutely perfect “driving on a warm night” music. other notable mentions are Hasta Quando, All Mine, and Happy Now.
tonally the album feels like i’m sitting in a forest during the morning twilight. each track is dark, the vocals are haunting and echoey, but there is always a sense that life is blooming somewhere just out of view; the sun will come, the darkness will ultimately be transcended, and when this red moon passes we will walk in the light of a new day.
yuele | serotonin II
another month, another dark synth album to be obsessed with. what else is new? if you haven’t read Tsutomu Nihei’s Blame! you absolutely should read it, ideally with this album as your background music. it invokes the same sense of sprawling underground tunnels, cities without limit, and strange machinery churning in the walls around you.
with albums like this it’s hard to break them apart into individual tracks, since so much of it flows together, but obvious shoutouts must be made for See You Space Cowboy, Poison Arrow, and Pocky Boy.
l’imperatrice | odyssée
well, now for something totally different.
odyssée tells the story of the empress and her court on an adventure. they go to a tropical land but ultimately get detoured by imperial exuberance, astral creatures, and the empress’s libertine tenderness. sounds pretty gay (positive). then they go to space! will they ever come back? we’ll never know.
i don’t speak french, so some of this stuff is guessed at by using translations.
it’s a fun album full of otherworldly instrumentation and funky beats. what’s not to love!
fav five
these are 5 hand-picked tracks that really stood out to me this month, regardless of total play count
the truth is | Σtella
a simple little song about lost love. it has everything you need: solid bassline, a girl going “oooo” over and over, and it’s easy to remember. great for listening to while you’re on public transit during the early morning. it says i played the album 64 times, probably 50 of those were me listening to this song in one day.
ain’t that just the way!
❅ LAST MINUTE ❅ | kitty
one of the most 2014 tracks in existence. if u don’t know what that means it’s ok, i don’t either lol.
i’m always a sucker for songs about being a bad influence, the line “you’re all poised and i’m made of posion” just …. hits. there’s probably some psychology there.
great track for dancing around the house while doing chores.
sole survivor | blue öyster cult
why the fuck did no one tell me that this band made songs about wizards and space and shit. i thought it was all Don’t Fear the Reaper. don’t get me wrong it’s a great song but i’m more drawn in by this type of stuff.
i’m running a game of Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City for a friend’s birthday in April, so i’ve been listening to some of the same music the author did when they made the game.
expect the april music post to reflect a lot of that influence because it is unlocking something totally new in me.
𝑃𝐼𝐴𝑁𝑂 𝐵𝐿𝐴𝐶𝐾 | the seatbelts
it’s the seatbelts. yoko kanno is one the greatest to ever do it. i don’t have a lot to say here, this track is just so good, they all are. go watch cowboy bebop right now
new conditions | april (irl)
a song about throwing yourself into a relationship just because, well, what else is there to do?
really resonates w/ early-20s-jade who made lots of bad and stupid decisions because of relationships that fell into this exact category.
great song tho! lots of melancholy, which can be good to feel sometimes.
